The Papua New Guinea Seasonal Workers Scheme (PNGSWS) is a pilot program which is a beneficiary  of the Australian Governments Pacific Seasonal Workers Pilot Scheme (PSWPS). The PSWPS is a three year program with 2,500 seasonal worker visa permits for the Pacific Islanders.  Papua New Guinea joined the Pacific Seasonal Workers scheme in an MOU signed between the Governments of Papua New Guinea and Australia in July 2010.
In the past Papua New Guinea was a labour receiving country, the signing of the MOU between PNG and Australia now opens the doors for more potential overseas employers to demand Papua New Guinean Labour Market force.

New Zealand has shown interest through the New Zealand Regional Seasonal Workers Employer Scheme (RSE) and will soon sign an Inter-Agency Memorandum with Papua New Guinea to facilitate PNG workers participation.

The Government of Papua New Guinea through Employment Promotions, Program 4 in the National Employment Division of the Department of Labour and Industrial Relations has embarked on supporting the PNG Governments’ Vision 2050 and the National Development Goals and Strategies in the promotion and creation of employment opportuniopportunities for Papua New Guineans. In 2020 it is anticipated that more than 3 million Papua New Guineans will be employed both in the national and international labour market. The objective of the PNG Seasonal Workers Scheme is to engage ordinary Papua New Guineans, disadvantaged, unemployed or under-employed and unskilled able men and women in rural areas, to participate in wealth generating and productive activities.

The program will assist returning seasonal workers to re-invest their earnings into productive activities and small businesses that may include the cultivation of horticultural products at the local Districts, Ward and Villages. And therefore create more jobs and contribute to strengthening the economy of Papua New Guinea through exports.

More importantly seasonal workers will greatly benefit from the economic earnings from their employment experiences in Australia and with remittance guidance, seasonal workers will be able to plan their future and business.
